Discipline Tips

February 2005

Discipline is a necessary part of any club's Pathfinder program

Preventing Discipline Problems:

  • Plan an extensive program of activities

  • Never come to the meeting unprepared
  • Set up democratic standards of conduct -- not just rules
  • Make friends with your Pathfinders
  • Be democratic in your dealings but remember you retain the final authority.
  • Keep a sense of humor
  • Never use sarcasm or ridicule
  • Be aware of faultfinding. Work in a positive way to correct them.
  • Be fair and impartial; Don't play favorites.
  • Maintain your self-control. Practice patience.

Balanced Discipline:

Avoid discipoine problems by:

  • The establishment of fair rules and regulations. First, set up a point system, second, have a list of regulations
  • The instruction and enforcement of such rules.
  • Being consistent. "Rules should be few and well considered, and when once made, they should be enforced. WHatever it is found impossible to change, the mind learns to recognize and adapt itself to." Education, p. 290.
  • Presenting devotional guidelines on discipline, explaining the Pathfinder Pledge and Law
  • Counseling and praying with Pathfinders before administering disciplinary action.
  • Counseling with indifferent parents. Parents may think they are defending their child because of love; yet, "It is not love but sentimentalism that palters with wrong-doing, seeks by coaxing or bribes to secure compliance, and finally accepts some substitute in place of the thing required." Education, p. 290.
  • Explaining club discipline to parents. Normally, when they understand, they cooperate.

Thoughts for this article came from Chapter 4 in the Pathfinder Staff Manual.
