Photography Honor
Quick Facts
Here are answers to the basic questions you might have when attempting to earn or teach the Photography AY Honor.
  1. How long does this honor take to complete?
This honor can be done as quickly as a weekend camping trip or field trip. It may also be done in a 1 hr. classroom setting, then 1-2 2 hr Sunday fieldtrips. This is a fun honor. Don't hurry it!
  2. Where are good places to do this honor?
    • On a camping weekend
    • On vacation
    • With a group of Pathfinder friends
    • Sunday afternoon fieldtrips
    • At the zoo
    • At Camporee
    • In your neighborhood
    • At a Community Service project
  3. Is it okay to experiement?
YES! The best photographers are the ones who ask: "If I do change the lighting," or "if I stand over here," or "what would happen if I look up at something instead of straight on".

You'll be amazed at how different pictures can be depending on where they are taken, what lighting was used, and whether the timed exposure was slow or fast.

  4. Where do I buy disposable cameras? How do I get the film developed?
    • Any place like walmart, Target, Kmart, Drug stores (Eckerds, CVS, Walgreens, etc.) should have disposable cameras. They usually cost $3-$5 for 27-36 exposures. You NEED TO buy one with a built in flash.
    • Get your film developed at Wal-mart or any other "developer." However, be sure you write special directions: "DO NOT COLOR CORRECT" in the special instructions part of your film developing envelope. Otherwise, some of the hard work you went to in order to underexpose or over expose a picture they may "fix" in develping the photo. 1-Hour developers are especially guilty in automatically color correcting. Of course, if you want the best developing for you film, choose a photo lab such as Wolf Camera. It'll cost you more, but you'll get the highest quality photos, exactly as you took them.
  5. How much film will I need?
At least 36 exposures. Remember the honor asks you to take "correct" as well as "incorrect" photos for comparison purposes.
  6. Have you ever tried Photography in an urban setting?
Use as part of study of the AY Honor "Cultural Diversity Appreciation" which in realtiy can be a study into the ethnic diversity present in your city. Take pictures of Urban blight, Downtown missions, playing in the street, whatever life has around you, take pictures of it.

Here's the bottom line: Have fun discovering how a camera can captures moods, expressions, light, color, and action. Most of all, discover how your photography adventure will teach you how to capture pathfinder memories for years to come! Have fun!
