On p.77 of the NAD staff manual the only mention of a tie is for the staff and it doesn't specify which one women are supposed to use (tuxedo tie or regular tie). In the Adventsource catalog on p. 5, entitled "Girl's Uniform", the tuxedo tie is there, but the staff manual says that the only neckwear is the scarf and slide and it is o be worn with an open collar. The Pathfinder website is not clear either in that it only mentions what color the tie should be. I am SO CONFUSED! I've always worn my tuxedo tie, both as a Pathfinder and as staff. I would like for all of my club to own and wear the correct Class A uniform. PLEASE HELP!

The most current published standard is that:

Staff members where neckties: The women's tie has traditionally been the cross over or tuxedo tie. This standard is based on an old standard where Master Guide uniforms included ties and girls in 7th grade and up wore ties as well as all boys and non-MG staff. In those days of antiquity the tie was defined as the tuxedo tie for girls/women and the four in hand tie for boys and men.

Pathfinders where no tie: Some clubs today still use neck ties for Class A uniforms although it is less common.

TLT and Junior Staff: For TLT's there is still no tie officially and Junior staff today are largely involved in a TLT program or its equivelant. Often club who do not use ties for Pathfinders will for TLT's.

The short is that the published NAD standard is staff where ties and Pf's do not. Women where the Tuxedo tie and men the tradional long tie with a proper knot.

Every club I've been a part of (3 total) in both Northern and Southern New Englad Conference has required all male members to wear a black tie (clip on or regular) and the female members wear the black tuxedo tie offered through Advent Source. As long as we have the required items, can we not include the ties uniformly throughout our club?

How about the black beret? Some clubs wear them and some do not. Wouldn't wearing the tie by PF and Staff alike fall into the same category (Director's Discretion)?

Sure. You can make ties a requirement throughout your club. Most of the time though, for any uniform questions, check you conference & division standards.

To my knowledge, the beret is still totally optional. But again, check with your conference & division guidelines.

I've never worn a tie with my Class A, and I'm not sure if I would like the looks of it with a sash. I think Class B would look good with a tie though.

For Junior and teen boys with a sash on it has often been tradition that the tie be tucked into the shirt about half way down, a form borrowed from military practices of old as is the uniform its self. Usually if you wear the proper sized tie and know how to tie it to a proper length it will look good even under a sash.

When I was a younger pathfinder. The club I was in used ties quite often, though they said that they were optional. I was told that if you had a tie on that it was to go under the sash but that the scarf was to go over the sash.

As far as I know, that is correct. The berets are not officially required, although I think they look awesome :D In the club I'm in, ties are required for all, members and staff alike. I think it looks very sharp, and I like having everyone all dressed up!

If you were to call AdventSource and ask if the tie is required you would be directed to call your local Conference for the official word.

There is a progression in the standard:
The Division sets the standard for everyone.
The Union resets the standard to fit the scope of their overall constituents.
The Conference again resets the standard to fit the needs of their local clubs.

The club should ALWAYS check with their local Conference for the standard to be followed. Any other standard will be simply wrong for your club.

Lonny has it exactly right!

The tie is an AVAILABLE option for any conference to require of its club members.
