Hi
In South New Zealand conference for the past 4 years to do PLA for the skills section which used to be a ten hour lecture we now do New Zealand Qualification standards. I was in the trial run batch when this developed and after several years what was required was finalized. We actually do river crossings, bush survival, weather interpretation, bush first aid, team managment skills, communication of ideas to a group, communication using 2way radio, camping below snowline, navigation and map reading, action based learning, managing hazards, etc. All of these are certificated by the NZ Government and can go towards a NZ outdoor certifiacte. These are recognised by any outdoor organsization through out the country. See the conference web site http://snzyouth.adventist.org.nz/ also http://www.tuiridgepark.co.nz/ .
Before reinventing the wheel in USA a good idea would be to see if there are any nationally approved qualification that can be gained. It just happens that in NZ the Pathfinders club is well represented in the national standards board where the NZ outdoor standards are develpoed. Many of the NZQA units are just like a pathfinder honour.
Invercargill Pathfinder Club. The southern most club in the world.

harv4, first welcome to the forum.

That's a very interesting way to complete the PLA and be recognize by the government.

I did check both websites a little bit. My computer is going 'crazy'. :( Will check again later.

I just rechecked the Tui Ridge web site just now but the "Adventist Outdoors" hypo link not working but all the info on the snzyouth site. PLA & P Specialist Award (PSA). Since the first batch did it it has been reduced a bit as the programme we did took a lot of time. If you want details of the NZQA unit standards let me know.
Geoff.

I think those few of us who have commented here believe in the usefulness of this idea. We need more input to make this a reality so I hope some ideas will come from those of us at this forum on what your needs are and how you would be best served from an online format.

I just would like to ask regarding this matter if, the idea of an online PLA is getting through. We are interested specially in our place that is always late on PF ideas. I have been in many pathfinder staff training but I could still working on it. Could any body help how could I be invested in PLA tnx and is it possible the PIA be online.

Blessing,

Ric

labutakti,

You should talk with your Conference Youth Director to invest you as PLA during: Leadership Weekend, Camporee or a regular Investiture program in your church.

I was invested as PIA during our Camporee this past October. :D
