Um, hi guys (and gals).

This the site for Azure Hills Pathfinders: http://www.ahpathfinders.com

It's under renovation for the Pathfinder year, but I'm pretty sure it'll be up soon.

There are lots of free hosting sites you can use, and several that offer no-ads plus extra storage among other things for a reasonable price.

Here's a few good free sites I've come across:
http://members.freewebs.com/
http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
http://www.bravenet.com/

There are lots of others out there. Hope that helps.

Yes you can host it yourself, but you'll have to pay. Those links are to free sites that will host your site for you but you will still have the power of creating the site.

I'm not sure what you mean when you write "host it yourself." Do you mean host it on your own PC? If so, then under certain conditions, it's relatively free. The best scenario for that is if you have a static IP address. Most ISP's give you a dynamic IP address (a connection with a static IP costs big bux). The advantage of a static IP address is that you can then map a domain name to your IP address. You have to pay for the domain name, but it's only a dozen dollars a year or so, depending on who you use to regisiter the domain.

If you don't have a static IP, all is not lost (unless things have changed). You can use a service like dyndns.com. If it's not free, it is pretty cheap. You still have to register a domain name and map it to them. Then they will forward your traffic to your dynamic IP.

Unfortunately, that's the easy part. The hard part is setting up a web server AND KEEPING IT SECURE. I ran a web server for three or four years until about a year ago, and I had to keep tabs on it every day. The last thing you want is for someone to take over your server and use it to serve illegal content (you could be liable), or make a bad name for your web site (especially if it's a Christian website - the stuff these people do is very much un-Christian).

Do NOT think that you won't be a target. The black hat community uses robots to search out vulnerable computers so they can turn them into spam bots or illegal content hosts. They don't care who YOU are, they only care if your PC can be commandeered. And if you don't know what you're doing, they have a pretty good chance of succeeding.

All in all, I'd say that paying a hosting service is well worth the money. But before you go that route, see if your ISP has free web space. They very well may.

Wow, thanks for the tips. Those are really handy.

I really like the website. It's really cool, your club is doing a great job with it.
