In attendance at a Directors training Session last weekend it was mentioned that in teaching the classes that all the requirements must be completed as well as one of the optional sections as specified in each section. This is fine. However it was also mentioned that with regards to honors that all the honors in each class card must be completed. Even if the Pathfinder has 20 honors completed but they have not completed all the required honors for their class they should not be invested as their are certain honors that is built upon as they progress through the classes. If this is the case how do I now teach the Explorer Ranger and Voyager class honors to Pathfinders who did not have the opportunity to start from Friend, Companion or Explorer?

The classes each start many honors. You can find a chart that lays this out at my website.

There are some that are required specifically for a class, such as certian first aid honors.

If a new Ranger joins your club, that Pathfinder will need to complete both First aid, Basic and first aid to be invested.

If a new Ranger joins your club, that Pathfinder will NOT have to earn the Lichens..., or the Shells honor to be invested.

Certian things do build on others, so it will be easier for a Ranger to complete the course of study having been in Pathifnders for two previous years BUT it is not a neccessity. Some honors require other honors, and to be invested you must complete some honors. Like in the First Aid example above a requirement of that honor is to have another particular honor so, that one must be EARNED first, they can all be AWARDED simultaniously at your ceremony.

Each Class has certian items that are mandatory; in some sections the madatory requirement is to complete an either or from the section or a particular one and either or of the remaining: This is a must. If a Pathfinder completes all of every section then they have earned investiture in the advanced rank for that class.

Because some items are at issue in individual cases the AY Instructor's Manual provides alternative requirements for substitution in some areas. If you do not have this manual or your club does not have this manual you are handicapped out of the gate and need to get it. Even the most Experience Master Guides have use for it since it contians the list of Memory verses for each class etc.

Although each class may start several honors in a given year they need not complete them to be invested unless they are stated as earn (complete) the... Drilling and Marching is broken out over several classes and Stewadrship is started but never completed. Each class requires the completion of Three to four specific honors in a year.

Campskills: As some readers have seen, it is possible to complete all four of these honors in one year with the bulk in one weekend. There is a booklet available from our site that is an outline of the weekend event this will help you with a new Ranger who does not have Campskills I-III.

There is no benefit is skipping requirements, even those who enter as adults and first get their Master Guide will often (and I encourage it) go back and earn (often through teaching) the lower classes to enhance their compitence as leaders.

God Bless,

Chris Fishell
