The TLT program is a wonderful program. I am no longer in the TLT program, but I think that the world it. I can't tell you a favorite part of the program though.

The TLT program is great. It really helps you grow as a budding leader and makes you all-around more responsible. At times it can be stressful and/or frustrating, but over all I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to work hard!

You already know that I love being in TLTs, but what did you think about it Kate?

I am a tlt and it is awesome! As tlt when we go camping we often get privileges like sitting in chairs while everybody else is sitting on the benches and being the first to get special meal treats (such as hashbrowns when their scarce) after staff of course.

On the flip side it can be frustrating. We are mostly comprised of girls who are pre teens. They really don't listen and can be really snobbish. You really can't threaten them because they may tell their parents. ( A friend of mine wanted them to do push ups but we realized it would only get us in trouble.) This is a respect thing so we are getting over it and trying to be nice and earn it.

All in all I really enjoy being a tlt and it is a good leadership expereince.

The hard part for me is that no one will listen to me! I mean seriously, once I told a kid to do something while we were breaking camp and he asked me if I was relaying a message from an adult. Ug.

Same thing I have an older TLT who totally understands if we tell them to do something and they ignore us. It's just that they have an attitude problem. You just have to show your the boss. Not aggressive or anything just do your best to be a leader.

Well, part of the problem is that I have a very..... non work oriented? personality. I mean, I do my share of the work on campouts, but I just have a general non-serious attitude about life.

Hmmm I guess they have known you for a while and you being a TLT is a shock to them. So you telling them to work all of a sudden seems unfair because they have known you for awhile. Maybe something like that. I dunno why they don't like listening to me. I guess because I am new to this group of pathfinders.

maybe if you got a whip lol... no seriously, I guess this sort of thing just takes time until they either quit, realize that you can be a good leader, or become TLTs themselves and go through this same thing (this is where you tactfully point out that they did this to you).

Nah I would rather they just listen to me instead of waiting for them to become TLT's...

I think that more discipline should be implemented. Some good ones are running laps, push ups, things like that.

We do push-ups at our club, though I'm not sure that TLTs can give them.... and I would have to be careful not to get too trigger happy

Me neither but I wouldn't be afraid to dish them out if someone was being rude or disrespectful or not taking orders or something.

I don't like abusing power but you would be suprised... their attitudes and everthing

"Did an adult tell you to tell me?"

I SHOULD have said, "No, and I don't need one. Do it."

Yeah.... Not that I hate being a TLT. There are some nice things that go with it, such as when the kids DO listen to you, and the fact that you have more say in things.

Yeah I love it to. That's only the downside. When we go camping we get eating priveleges such as gettting hashbrowns before other people. Things like that but it is also that you get a bigger voice in discussions and stuff.

And in the Northern New England Conference, we get to help plan some of the stuff for the camporees. I was gonna have a Sunday game at the fall one this year, but it was cancelled because of the weather.

That's kind of sad. Simply put we really haven't done anything since were first year TLTS. Are you going to Osh Kosh? That is one of the major things TLT's can be involved in that and the mission trip.

I will be going to Oshkosh, though I probably won't do anything there. I have very little experience as a TLT

The reason that most Pathfinders have a hard time listening to you is that you used to be just like them. What they really need to understand is that you are learning how to be a leader (including staff). Explain that you aren't trying to be their boss but that you need to learn and ask them to cut you a little slack. It doesn't always work, but it helped me some.

It also helps to have an age gap between the Pathfinders that you are working with and yourselves. Work with the friends or Companions. They are much younger than you. They may not have the same attachment to you as your friends who are closer to you age. They likely already look up to you as a model of sorts. Don't push them around too much, but they are much more likely to help you learn how to be a good leader.

Good point... They haven't known me for awhile so it's like HEY! Who's this stranger telling me what to do! I get kind of frustrated I do work with those in an age gap with me companions, explorers, friend ect ect.

They are the ones that give the most trouble and then my younger brother and sister naturally don't like to listen to me so I have to deal with that to. I still think TLT is a good expereince and I like a challange so I guess I will have to use leadership skills for people to listen to me....
