In Arizona we use a white shirt for our TLT's. I think it's great because they feel that they are part of their own unit, plus it looks real sharp! Does anyone else use something like this?

You use the white unifirm shirt in place of the normal tan one for Class A? I think that's awesome! While at Oshkosh, I had a chance to talk to Glen Milam. He came up with the TLT program idea originally, but it was first called the FLITE program. There were insignia to identify the level the TLT was currently working on. The black/gold stars are for the completion of said level. I think that I will discuss this with my conference director, as this is a very cool idea. Unfortunately, I am almost complete with my TLT training, so I may not get to use anything that goes into effect. It would be really awesome if we had some thing to identify the current level/department the TLT is in, it would make us stand out more;) Maybe getting colored berets for the TLTS???

Well, the TLT Director also wears the white shirt. All it is is the Adventurer staff shirt. But it does look really cool. And it definitely makes them stand out in the group, but thats what TLT's need anyway, they are the future leaders. When I get out Pathfinder site up I will post the link here so you can see the uniform. All the younger kids actually aspire to become TLT's and I think that the different uniform makes a difference.

We use a red shoulder braid to signify our TLT's. (available from Advent Source)

For TLT Uniforms: A couple of years ago we started using the US Army Warrant Officer Rank Insignia on the collar to show the year they are currently in as a TLT wo1 - cw4 and we also piloted a plan to use a pin to designate their assignment (admin asst., qrtr mstr...) on the other side of the collar. This since TLT's are to rotate assignments in their learning of club administration.

We use the white shirts, as well...and yes, it does look spiffy! We find it a lot easier to distinguish JT's (TLT's) from the Pathfinders, and it's kind of nice to have a distinguishing uniform, since the teens do a lot of camping trips and programs as a unit.

Only one problem for the girls with the shirts, however...most of the girls are pretty tiny in our club, and the smallest size is still really big on them! I think we'll petition to have them start making extra smalls...

Check your local uniform shops. Fire Departments and Police Departments across the US use white shirts. You may find exactly what you are looking for their, also they are usually taylors and some are willing to donate some services.

You might also check http://www.galls.com the largest uniform provider in the USA.

That's what our club does too. We basically wear the same uniform save for the shoulder cord and the patches. We don't want to stand out too much, but do want to be recognized as something more.

According to the TLT manual (pg 10) the official color is tan.

Yes, tan is correct, but white looks so good. Sometimes I even with I could wear it. Our seventh and eighth graders just can't wait to put that white shirt. Sometimes I think they stay in Pathfinders just to get to the TLT level.

Also, according to the TLT manual, the uniform can be customized by each conference. Any modifications to the official TLT uniform must be apporoved by the local conference. This includes things like year and dept insignia, extra shoulder cord loops (and probably shirt colors too).

We started white in AZ before there was a TLT program. It is widely liked so it was kept. It has its down side, the shirts are easy to get but good ones are not cheap and white is easier to ruin than tan. I have always liked it (speaking as one of the first to ever wear one). Much of my CIT days were in tan though, became a leader too young to enjoy the white much.

Each conference that is considering a change should be considerate of both usefulness and price. As to usefulness [example], it rains little in AZ but in Washington state it rains often. White will not be a great color for teens (either boys or girls) if it is raining on them. This means manditory dress uniform coats that will go with it, now modesty has driven up the cost of the uniform. A tan shirt can have a black undershirt and not show through normally and barely when wet thus any rain coat will do.

At the last NAD Pathfinder Counsel, we established a uniform taskforce to try and answer some of the numerous, but mostly small issues dealing with uniforms and insignia.

One of the obvious issues is how to make the TLT uniform different. The white shirt is the current front runner, but there may be other great ideas out there. Someone recently suggested red and white stripped stocks, worn over the lower portion of the pants. It’s colorful, but not quite what we are looking for!

If you have other ideas, please drop me a line: glenmilam@myactv.net.

I currently serve as chair of the NAD Pathfinder Leadership Development Taskforce and as a member of the new Uniform Taskforce.

That sounds really cool! It makes a TLT feel really good when they stand out from the rest of the club. But, it is possible to go overboard. As always, check with your local conference about the rules for uniforms. And remember, each group will react differently.

AdventSource already carries black number stars to denote what year a TLT has completed in their program. A new TLT gets the TLT pin and cord. At the end of the first year, they get the black number 1 star, and so forth. Also, in a lot of clubs the individual TLT track insignia won't quite work. Many clubs have their TLTs working on various sections of their TLT curriculum in the same year, especially small ones where the TLTs are all-around helpers all the time. As long as they finish all the sections within 4 years of the program that will work just fine. If we have insignia for every little thing a person does pretty soon the uniforms will look like pin collector vests! I'm all for recognizing the kids' accomplishments, but there is a such thing as overdoing it in my humble opinion.

Just curious, for those of you who have your TLTs dressed differently (i.e. in white shirts instead of tan), do you have them also stand in a different unit when in formation? For example if you have the Pathfinders fall in by class levels, do you add an additional line for TLTs so that all the white shirts are together, or do you still have them line up with the rest of their class (since they are still Voyager, Guides, and MGITs) even though they are dressed differently?
