Many clubs use FRS radios a bit as toys and some conferences use FRS and GMRS for Camporees.

Consider this. A Conference and large clubs may be able to obtain and license GMRS mobile repeaters to use for large gatherings. At the price almost any group can get FRS wich does not need licensing and most GMRS is low cost as well.

There are 14 FRS frequencies and 23 GMRS frequencies.
7 FRS frequencies are shared with GMRS
8 unique GMRS and 7 unique FRS
8 Repeated GMRS channels. A GMRS radio compatable for repeaters will have 23 frequencies not 22. 22 is 14FRS and 8 non-repeater GMRS.

Your group should pre-determine channel usage. If you are part of a conference camporee an FRS channel for each club or if you have more than 14 one FRS channel with different privacy tones, you will still hear others but not talk to them allowing your group to "talk over" them. Large clubs may use GMRS if properly licensed. GMRS have longer range so they are better for coordinating the full event and communicating across a large camp.

The key to good radio use is to train those with access and require them to follow the rules. Each club MUST agree to the rules as policy. Then to properly assign and designate channels. You wil want 2 emergncy channels, one at least per club (more with multiple privacy tones), two or more for event coordination, one for announcements.

Check ebay even base stations are cheap now with 8 GMRS, the rules changed a couple of years ago making older, weaker FRS radios out of date causing even a brand new equipment drop in price.

I can not tell you how much I walked when I could have used a radio if everyone had been set up. Even the infantry aids had horses before radio, it seems I am always walking at camporees and fairs.

God Bless,

The use of cell phones can be of great benefit in Camporees like FoF.
We used them very effectively.
Out in the wilderness with no cell phone coverage, we have used the FRS radios effectively.

For Conference Camporees, the Area Coordinators have Conference Radios.

Our conference doesn't care if we use radios. Our Union on the other hand is banning all forms of telecommunication. Talk about weird...

Very interesting, Rangerman.

As a licensed Amateur Radio Operator I find all such communication bans interesting. Perhaps if you gathered some information on the benefits of electronic communications at an event like a Union Camporee, and with the help of your Conference Pathfinder leaders presented it to the Union leadership, you could change their minds.
