What are good ideas for knot board? just glue the knot down? tie the knot to the board with pre-drilled holes?

Thanks,
Carlos

For the past three or four years we've been using wooden boards (1x10 pine, about 2 feet long) for our knot boards. I mount a small tree branch along one edge for the hitches. The branch is held away from the board about an inch with a couple of dowels (or sometimes I use small stems on the branch instead of dowels).

We use hot melt glue to attach the knots to the board and then label them with a label-maker. Each kid adds knots to their board every year so that by the time they are in Ranger, they're almost finished.

I have found that things go much more smoothly if we pre-cut the rope before the meeting. We wrap a little duct tape around the rope and cut it in the center of the tape - that way neither end will fray. Cutting the rope into small pieces can take an enormous amount of time away from the teaching time. It's also a chance for the kids to lose interest. I have TLT's help me do that ahead of time.
