Well first off, welcome to the pathfindersonline forum community!

As for your question... I'm not sure if you mean trouble with physically doing the marching or trouble teaching you pathfinders. If you almost broke your ankle on an about face, you were probably doing something not quite right. I personally love drill & march, and am pretty much as expert on it as a teenage girl can be.

As a matter of fact, I am really excited b/c my drill instrutors said that if I would be willing to learn drums (a snare drum, for marching) that they would find me one!! I hvae been wanting one for a couple years!!!!!!

Okay, anyhow...

Try looking at about face as a dance move. (It's funny that I use this as an example. I hate dancing.) Don't try to stomp the move out. Instead, try to relax.

The best way to learn about face is a three step lesson. First, practice putting your right foot behind your left. Do this until you are comfortable and don't have much trouble keeping your balance. Second, practice turning around. Don't move on to this step until you are comfortable in step one. Again, do step two until you feel comfortable. Now normally, that would be it for about face. But I have added an extra step that I created for teaching the move to people that are having trouble with it. The third step is to do the entire move in slow motion. This final step helps you to learn to keep your balance while turning. It also helps you to do the move more smoothly, hence keeping you from hurting yourself. As with the first two steps, Repeat until you are comfortable doing the turn. When comfortable, speed up the turn until you are doing the turn in about two or less seconds instead of four or so seconds. This process will help you from hurting your ankle while executing the move.

I hope I have been helpful.

I've found that the best way to do drill is slow and steady... just focus on each individual thing and get it done right... don't worry about speed... that will come with practice.

very true. Slow and steady won the race! anyways, i have never really had problems with the about faces, but my left and rights are what almost always get me out in drill downs. i can do all the hard stuff, but the easy 'left face' and 'right face' get me out so fast. any ideas on how to fix that?

If the problem is that you turn left when right face is called, I recommend that you hold a small object in your left hand - a coin, a small rock - anything you can conceal in a closed hand. Squeeze it while you drill and KNOW that it is in your left hand.

BTW, that's what usually gets me knocked out too, but it's not usually right away.

I'm almost always the last one--or among the last ones if the drill instructor gives up on getting us out!--left in a drill down. One time recently, on the first command, I turned the wrong direction on a face... Humiliating!! ... j/k!

The small object thing never worked for me, but what I do do is along the same lines: I clench my right fist tighter than my left fist. Remember, "righty-tight, lefty-loosey"? Well, that's what I do. And that seems to do okay for me.

Left and right is the hardest part of drilling!

The best way to overcome a consistent error is to practice until you are doing the particular move correctly.
